-> the work -> "baselines and
elevation" series
"Much
like a child when drawing, whose only focus is the making of individual
work, I approach the process of art with a sense of play. These
paintings continue my concern with the loss of tactile experiences
in contrast to the multitude of simulated occurrences in present
everyday life. Just the other day, I saw a television commercial
with a man who appeared to be skiing and exhausted from the outing;
yet, he was actually playing a computer game. The intent of these
works is serious, but the process is fun, sometimes.
Baselines
and Elevations references the placement of compositional elements
in a young child's drawing and painting; the details can be family,
houses, animals, trees, flowers etc. Oftentimes, these characters
are lined across the bottom of the paper. As the child grows creatively,
these same elements rise and can be found in different perspectives.
Similarly, the abstract elements seen in Baselines hug the edges
weighted with color.
